Immortal Demons: Chapter 1

Just when I thought my streak of bad luck was over, I saw the demon dude leaning against my truck. Cami didn’t even notice him. She was too busy talking nonstop, trying to convince me to get back together with my ex-boyfriend, Dean. That was never going to happen.

“Seriously, Taryn, I promise he never messed with that Chloe girl. Give him another chance.”

“Not happening,” I huffed, trying to stay calm. “He cheated on me, remember? Maybe not with her, but definitely with that other bimbo he met at Randy’s party.”

Then it happened. Again. Anger surged through me, and blue fyre shot from my fingertips, engulfing a trashcan in flames.

Cami jumped back as an ember singed the bottom of her shirt. “Jesus, Taryn! You really need to learn how to control that.” She brushed it off and, as if nothing happened, continued rambling about my non-existent relationship with Dean.

“Seriously, T, just because girls throw themselves at him doesn’t mean he’s sleeping with them. They probably wouldn’t have if your uncle had let you stay a little longer.”

She might’ve been right, however he should’ve had the decency to blow them off—especially her. Not to mention, when I confronted him about the rumor, he didn’t deny it. He just brushed me aside like I meant nothing, like I was a fly on the wall he couldn’t be bothered with. There was no way I’d let anyone treat me like that, least of all a stupid guy.

“Cam, it’s over. Let it go. I have.”

“But he’s your boyfriend. He loves you, and he didn’t do anything wrong,” she said, pulling my face toward hers. “You know that, right?”

“My ex-boyfriend,” I corrected her, forcing myself to keep my emotions in check.

“Oh my god, just forgive him already. You can’t expect the hottest guy in school not to be wanted by every girl.”

“Not every girl is dumb enough to try and seduce him,” I shot back. “Why are you defending him so hard, anyway?”

“Because you’re my best girlfriend, and he’s my best guy friend. You two were perfect until you heard that dumb rumor.”

“You remember he didn’t deny it, right? I gave him a chance to explain, and he blatantly ignored me.”

“He was upset! Hurt that you’d even think he’d do that to you.”

“But he did do that to me. Last year. With Zoey. Or did you forget?” I shouldn’t have bothered. Cami was stubborn, and talking to her felt like talking to a brick wall. Hot or not, real men didn’t cheat on their girlfriends. Additionally, they didn’t even put themselves in situations where they could be tempted. I had more important things to worry about than idiotic boys who couldn’t be bothered to comb their stupid perfect hair. Ugh!

“You can’t be mad at him for being hot, T.”

I rolled my eyes, exasperated by her shallow view of him. “I’m done arguing about this,” I said firmly.

“Fine, but you guys were perfect together.”

That’s when I saw him. The demon dude. Only this time, he looked more human than demon. But there was no mistaking what he was. Even with the black leather jacket, I could see the large bulge where his wings were clumped up. I felt the darkness surrounding him, but something was different. There was a goodness about him, too. A white light radiated from his body, warming me as I got closer. His pale face and piercing blue eyes called to me, almost calming. I was drawn to him. Just as I got within five feet, he vanished.

I’d seen him four times this week alone. Every time he showed up, something went wrong. Setting things on fire had become a regular issue. He never spoke to me, and I was growing annoyed that he never stuck around long enough for me to yell at him. Even demon boys—unearthly, majestic, beautiful boys—were stupid. Ugh!

Cami’s phone rang. “It’s my mom,” she said.

“It’s fine, I’m heading home.”

Cami walked off, leaving me standing by my truck. I opened the door and threw my school bag inside, where it landed against the passenger door with a thud.

Across the lot, ten parking spots away, I heard Dean’s angry voice.

“Get off me!” he shouted at Chloe—the skank from Randy’s party.

“Dean, please,” she begged. “Don’t be mad at me. I never meant to break you two up.”

“Break us up? That’s exactly what you meant to do. What did you think would happen, spreading a rumor like that around school?”

She cried, her sniffles loud enough to echo in my ears. My super-sensitive hearing was going to be the death of me someday, I was sure of it.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

Dean grabbed her by the arms, lifting her away from his car door. “I’m sorry too. You just cost me the one thing I love most in this world.”

I smiled involuntarily at his words. Then, as he climbed into his car, he spotted me.

Crap! I quickly jumped into my truck and slammed the door, fumbling to get the key in the ignition. But before I could start it, Dean pulled up behind me and got out. Just my freaking luck! I had three choices: talk to him, drive over the parking curb in front of me, or back into his car and push it out of the way. While smashing his car was tempting, I shook the thought from my head and got out.

“Taryn, please talk to me,” he pleaded, his puppy-dog eyes trying to win me over.

“About what?” I asked, not really wanting an answer.

“Come on, don’t be like that. I love you. Let me make it up to you.”

Sincere or not, that wasn’t going to happen. First, he never apologized. Second, rumor or not, he’d done this before. I forgave him the first time, and look where that got me.

“And how exactly are you planning to do that?” I humored him.

“I don’t know, but if you let me, I’ll find a way.”

Before I could respond, Randy ran up to us, cutting him off. “Taryn, darling, you look beautiful today. NOT!” Randy’s voice grated on my nerves. How any guy could tolerate him as a friend was beyond me.

“Screw you, Randy.” The anger in my voice didn’t faze him.

“Dean, we gotta go, man. Practice, remember?”

“Can’t you see we’re in the middle of something, with your big bug eyes?” I snapped, feeling heat flush my cheeks.

“Look, witch, you’ve done enough damage,” he sneered.

“Whoa, dude, back off!” Dean stepped in, maybe thinking it would change my mind about him. It wouldn’t, but it was kind of nice to see him stand up to his thick-headed, douchey friend.

“She’s got you wrapped around her so tight you don’t know your head from your ass, man. You weren’t even focused on Friday, and if we’d lost, our shot at the championship would’ve gone right out the window.”

“Go! Get out of here!” Dean barked, anger lacing his voice.

Randy turned and pointed a finger in my face. “This is your fault, slut.”

That was it. He’d gone too far. My blood boiled, my heart pounded in my chest like a ticking bomb. I couldn’t control it. Blue fyre shot from my fingertips, barely missing him. Thank God—or whatever guardian angel was watching over me. The flames engulfed a tree behind us instead. Randy’s eyes widened, and for once, his mouth was too stunned to form words.

“Dean,” I said, stepping toward him, but he backed away, fear plastered across his face.

Ugh!

I climbed into my truck, my hands trembling so badly I dropped the keys twice before finally starting the engine. I drove over the curb, onto the sidewalk, and across the lawn to the student parking exit, heading home.

Damn it! How could I have let that little turd make me lose control again?
